A UNESCO World Heritage site, Lake Baikal is not only the oldest and deepest lake in the world; it contains 20% of the earth’s freshwater reserve. The lake is a long and a narrow crescent shape and home to several native species of animals and plants. In winter, the enormous Lake Baikal or Ozero Bajkal, in southern Siberia freezes over. Some areas can be skated on; others can be traveled over by sled or snowmobile.
