It might sound dangerous, but in Hawaii hitchhiking is actually a lot more common, even for tourists. As you get off the plane, you’ll probably see most passengers try to hail a cab or wait for someone to pick them up. You can get a free ride just by sticking your thumb up and waiting for a kind-hearted motorist to take you where you need to go, provided it’s on the way to where they’re heading. It might take around 30 minutes to find someone willing to give you a ride, and it’ll be even harder to grab a free ride on the southern part of the Big Island.
